Week 9 Return on Investment for FBS and FCS WRs Review; Update

What is Wide Receiver Return on Investment?
In short, ROI represents the amount of yards a receiver generates in excess of his distribution quota.   This allows us to see which receivers make the most of their opportunities.

Week 9 Update

The playoff picture is beginning to develop as the season enters November.  This space will begin to have some in-depth player reports to give more background into the athletes behind the numbers. Until then, let's start with a recap of the Players to Watch.

Players to Watch - Week 9 Review

Ohio's Sebastian Smith 4/90/1 vs. Toledo (compared to team stats 7/159/2).

Toledo's Cody Thompson 6/73/0  vs. Ohio (compared to team stats 32/438/3).

TCU's Taj Williams 4/52/0 vs. TTU (compared to team stats 16/160/0).

WVU's Shelton Gibson 2/33/1 vs. Oklahoma State (compared to 24/212/1).

OKST's James Washington 6/117/0 vs. WVU's (compared to 26/273/3).

Bed Wetter of the Week...
Fresno State's Aaron Peck wet the bed going 1/16/0 vs. the same  AFA team that dropped its shorts to Hawai'i's Marcus Kemp the week before for 6/151/2.

FBS players to watch

Syracuse's Amba Etta-Tawo vs. Clemson- ET has moved into the high productivity range that typically erodes efficiency however, with a solid effort he can be part of the rare group of highly productive and highly efficient receivers. But that Clemson passing defense is 4th in the nation so it won't be a cakewalk.

Northwestern's Austin Carr vs. Wisconsin - Having watched a bit of tape on Carr already, this will be a defining game from a draft status perspective. While he sports high WR Return on Investment, he benefits from a high target count (have not calculated; but it's obvious watching tape). They are hosting Wisconsin's #10 passing defense.

FAU's Kalib Woods vs. Rice - Woods is not a household name, but he
has been able to keep his name on the ROI list for most of the season with efficient, if not monstrous stats.  He has a chance to blow up the stat sheet this week vs. the worst passing defense in the country.

Here comes that man again.
East Carolina's Jimmy Willliams retains his spot for the second consecutive week as the top Blue Chip performer with a ROI of 77.8%, which reflects his pro rata output for the Pirates.  With an average ROI of 18.1% for the top 150 FBS WRs (based on receiving yards), his output is just over 4.25x better than the average WR.
He faces a top 25 team in terms of passing defense in Tulsa this Saturday.

Towson's Christian Summer's retains his #1 spot in FCS. The range of ROI scores is much tighter than in FBS so there has been a lot of turnover in their week to week rankings.  He faces 44th ranked passing defense Elon.

Duquense's Wayne Capers Jr (son of an NFL WR and U Kansas women's basketball team member) continues to inch his way up the efficiency standings while sitting at 22nd in FCS Receiving Yards.

Due to the late update, no D2 this week (it's Keelan Cole at WR#1, as usual) but I will have an update with my nemesis CBSSports updated WR rankings for the 2017 draft.  It's a cluster!
